1.What
are online newspaper paywalls? Are they effective?
A
pay wall is a method of restricting access to
content via a paid
subscription. They are
effective as readers are intrigued by the
striking
headline and beginning of the article
and so pay money to
carry on reading. It is a
funding opportunity.
2.How are newspapers currently funded?
Newspapers are funded by the cover price, which
is the main source of income. The weekday,
guardian price is £2.20. The Sunday Observer is
£3.20. They can also be funded by advertising.
Where brands would pay the newspaper company
money to promote their brand. One other way it
is funded is through pay walls. They also can be
funded through sponsorship.
3.What
are the roles of the IPSO and IMPRESS?
Why do they exist? When
have they been
important?
Ipso regulate newspapers (and magazines) in the
UK. Their role is to receive complaints from
members of the public and make suitable to
changes to ensure no one is offended and the
content is appropriate and not deemed as
offensive. Unlike IPSO IMPRESS is an independent
press regulator that is fully compliant with the
recommendations of the Leveson inquiry. the
guardian and Observer is regulated by IPSO. They
are important as us and readers see the
newspaper as more reliable and trustworthy,
giving the newspaper a good reputation.
4. Why
is the circulation
and advertising
revenue of
newspapers declining?
This is because in a modern society, news is
diversified and available on multiple
platforms, specifically online. So readers do
not need to go out of their way to purchase the
newspaper as you can access it for free
online. Therefore brands may not want to invest
their money in hard copies as there are more
beneficial ways to advertise.
5.How far
can online newspapers reach in terms
of audience? Look at
Guardian/Observer as
examples. What online formats have they got?
The Guardian/Observer have an app, instagram,
twitter and Facebook profile. This makes the
newspaper more appealing for a younger
target audience and so entices a mass audience
as they have a hard copy and digital copies.
