News regulation and Politics

News regulation and Politics

The Guardian and Observer
The Guardian is a daily newspaper published by the guardian group and owned by the Scotts trust.
The observer is a Sunday newspaper published by the Guardian group. Its basically the guardian released on a Sunday with more of a focus on investigative, long tern=m, journalism but it will still report on immediate news.

They follow 5 key principles
  • Develop ideas that help improve the world, not just critique it.
  • Collaborate with readers and other to have a greater impact.
  • Diversify, to have richer reporting from a representative newsroom- around the world, reflective of everyone.
  • Be meaningful in all our work
  • Report fairly on people as well as power and find things out. This underpins all of the above.
How powerful are newspapers?
Newspapers are owned by individuals with their own political and social agendas and these ideologies are reflected in the editorial content of the papers.

Ideology- A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.

The Guardian and Observer is a liberal newspaper, however it does tend to subtly favour labour.

Liberal is unbiased
Right wing is conservative
The daily mirror is liberal whereas the daily express is right wing.

  • The daily mirror is more personal, this is shown through the headline using personal pronoun 'I'. Suggests he is selfish and only cares about himself rather than the country.
  • The daily express- 'Be ready'- prepared views implied, biased against the ideology of leaving brexit. Imperatives, creates a sense of certainty.
  • The daily mirror has statistics at the bottom of the newspaper for remain and leave, showing that it is unbiased as showing both on remain and leave.
  • The daily express- holiday advert- suggests the target audience is of a higher class as they have the disable income to spend on holidays and s is appealing.
  • Daly express- Farage wants to silence remainders showing him in a bad light, he is presented as selfish.
  • The daily express image of Nigel almost ridicules him.
Freedom of the press

Freedom of the press is the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by the government.
