Regulation and Politics HL

Leveson Inquiry
The Leveson inquiry was a judicial public inquiry into the culture, practises and ethics of the British press following the news international phone hacking scandal. Sienna Millers phone was being hacked by journalists, it left her feeling violated and caused her to distrust her family and friends, as she didn't know who it was. She was scared and confused as to how everyone knew where she was constantly as well as personal information. It turned out this was happening to lots of victims they wanted to exploit.

IPSO
Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) Is a regulator of magazines and newspapers and their online copies. It is funded by these magazine and newspaper companies. Any member of the public can make a complaint to IPSO. IPSO claim all the news they regulate is new, it delivers what the Leveson inquiry recommends  and claim they are the toughest regulator in the world. However some argue it is biased and intrudes on ordinary peoples lives.  When you use IPSO, or any regulator, it makes readers trust the news and so want to read it and helps the companies reputation.

OFCOM
This is the broadcasting regulator. If a person sees something on TV that they believe should not have been broadcast, they complain to them. It could be about advertising, something that was said or something that was offensive. This is backed by the law.  Despite this, things like tweets and bloggers are not regulated, but are meant to follow laws such as libel. Libel is publishing a false statement that is damaging a persons reputation.
